About Mark of Excellence Roses

Welcome to Mark of Excellence Roses! We are a private nursery located in Salem, Oregon in the fertile Willamette Valley which has one of the finest climates in the world for growing roses.

We are committed to excellence. We sell only what we grow ourselves so that we may control the quality of all the plants we ship. Our roses are guaranteed to be true to type and free of rose mosaic virus. They are guaranteed to grow and thrive in the hardiness zones for which they are rated and providing the planting and care instructions are followed.

Because of our commitment to excellence, we grow only own-root roses. While this is a more expensive way to produce new rose plants, there are many advantages to own-root roses:

  • Own-root roses are more winter-hardy.
  • There are no root stock suckers to contend with.
  • Virtually no transplant shock to worry about.
  • The bushes are more floriferous.
  • The bushes are more shapely and fit into the landscape more easily.
  • The bushes are longer-lived than grafted plants.

To save on shipping costs, our roses are one year old plants shipped in specially designed tree bands to encourage vigorous root growth. Being one year old plants, they are smaller than the two and three year old bare root plants you may buy from other companies. However, you will find that the plants will become just as large in their second season as other bare root and grafted plants.

The owner, Mark Lindsey, has extensive experience growing and caring for roses and other landscape plants. He is a Consulting Rosarian for the American Rose Society and a member of the Salem Rose Society. The nursery is a licensed grower in the State of Oregon and is licensed to ship roses to all 50 states.

We make available roses which:

  • Are highly rated by the American Rose Society,
  • Have historical significance, or
  • Are simply roses that we particularly like for our garden and want to share them with you.

We love to have visitors, but please note that our nursery is a private home-based business so you will need to call and make an appointment first.
